D-Day = 26 May 2015

Leading up to the big day we had a bit of a bumpy ride.  At 32 weeks my braxton hicks contractions got a bit intense and I got admitted to hospital to be monitored.  After 4 nights in the hospital a got discharged but was put on bed rest.  Seeing that we lived to far from the hospital I had to stay with my sister and her family.  For the next 2 weeks I was a couch potato.

On the morning of 25 May 2015 our little man decided to kick out my mucus plug that lead to me having to be admitted again.  This time there was no stopping him and Dr. Cillie scheduled the c-section for the next morning.  I was only 35 weeks along but Dr. Cillie gave me some meds that matured Gavin’s lungs enough so that he would not be in danger.

The morning of the 26th was a very emotional time.  Excited to meet our little boy but uncertain of what to expect after the birth.  As I was being prepped for surgery things got real.  The c-section went perfectly and at 10:12 our beautiful baby boy was born and weighed 2.75kg.  After the birth we only had a second to see him before he was rushed to NICU.  As I was still open on the table Gert went with him to the NICU while I was being closed up.

Once Gavin got to the NICU Prof. van Niekerk examined him.  Gert had a mountain of paperwork to fill out while Gavin was being prepped for his first surgery.  This day was a lot tougher for Gert than it was for me as I was as high as a kite on pain meds after the surgery.

Gavin was in theater for approximately an hour and a half.  Everything went great and he was back in his room in NICU where Gert was able to visit him.  I was not able to visit him till the next morning because of the epidural.  Nurse Ansie came to me in my room and assured me that Gavin was doing good and that she was taking good care of him. Gert went to his room and we did a video call so that I could see him aswell.
